Attached above is a story I wrote roughly ten years ago, inspired by the AI-box experiment, which I never got around to publishing (other than showing it to some friends). It feels embarrassingly out of date now, as it was written prior to (my awareness of) the deep learning revolution, which definitively shifted AI from being the product of clever engineering to a cursed process for growing alien minds. It also did not anticipate that people would immediately give cutting edge AI full access to the Internet just to see what would happen. Still, it's a fun story...and also a nostalgic time capsule from a more naïve time in AI speculation. Enjoy!
